The Readers' Advisory training is a building capability program for people who work in Queensland public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKC) who want to develop their skills and confidence in engaging with and assisting library patrons in finding the right book at the right time.
The program is designed to be completed in 3 weeks, there are no specific times you need to be available as the training is self paced and requires a commitment of approximately 5 hours per week, depending on the individual. The course will run from 6 May - 26 May 2025.
Successful applicants will explore:
- Reading levels and tastes of different customer groups
- A range of literature and formats
- Interview tips and strategies and how to provide advice to customers to meet their literature and reading needs
- Tools and resources of information to assist in meeting customer literature and reading requests
To apply for the Readers' Advisory training
Queensland Public Library or IKC staff are required to submit a Readers' Advisory application via Smarty Grants by 4pm, Thursday 10 April 2025.
Applicants must have the support and approval of their manager to participate in the training.
Successful applicants will be notified by the close of business Tuesday 29 April 2025.
Readers' Advisory Training places are limited and will be considered against the following selection criteria:
- Applicants must be staff members of a Queensland library service.
- Applicants are required to commit to the full professional development program. There is an expected commitment of at least 5 hours per week.
- Applicants are required to have the support of their manager (managers must be aware of the time commitment required).
- Applicant council must have no overdue annual or project funding, or previous travel bursary acquittals.
- Applicant must describe how completion of this PD will benefit their councils IKC/library service.
- Applicant must outline how learnings will be shared after the event.
- Applicants who participated in ALIA Readers Advisory training in 2024 will not be eligible for this round of training.
In the case that more applications are received than can be supported by State Library then consideration will also be given to the following:
- Attendance by new library staff who have not previously attended professional development will be prioritised.
- Geographic spread of the location of the applicants supported.
Applicants will be notified of the the outcome of their application by the close of business Tuesday 29 April 2025.
